I graduated from the Mayo Clinic and specialize in oncology and lymphedema.
Instead of using big words to explain why I do what I do, I tell this story:
One day, a woman came to see me 29 years after going through breast cancer surgery and radiation therapy.
Ever since her cancer treatment, this woman has lived with chronic pain and wasn’t able to lift her arm up to get dressed or wash her hair.
When she first started having this pain 29 years ago, her doctor told her that it was simply her “new normal” and she’d have to live with this pain for the rest of her life.
I knew that I had to try to encourage this woman to learn how to manage her pain. I explained to her that it wasn’t too late. The woman was hesitant at first, but week by week she started to make tangible progress in her shoulder motion.
In a few months, she could wash and style her hair without any pain at all – something she hasn’t been able to do for 29 years.
What pains me is that if this woman had had access to the right education, resources, and treatment early on, she wouldn’t have to spend the majority of her life in pain.
So, my mission is simple:
to educate as many people living with and after cancer and lymphedema that pain is common, not normal, and help them reclaim control of their everyday lives.
